With the hectic holiday season behind us, early January is the perfect time for setting goals and getting back to a normal routine. Here are some of my tips for getting yourself and your family back to a normal routine after the holidays.
If you traveled during the holidays, you returned home with bags of luggage to be unpacked and washed. Focus on emptying each piece of luggage as soon as possible, and then wash, dry and put away all clothing from your holiday travels.
Find Homes for New Gifts
If your family received new items as gifts this season, you will have some follow-up work to do. Remove every item from bags, remove tags, and be sure to write a thank you note. Find a place in a closet or dresser for all new clothing, create a place in a playroom or bonus room for all new toys, etc. Every new belonging should be given its own home, so it can be quickly found when needed.
Put Away Holiday Decorations
Schedule a time to take down all holiday decorations and pack them up to be stored until next year. Safely wrap fragile items, and if needed, buy new storage containers for any new ornaments or decorations that were bought this year.
Prepare Your Calendar for the New Year
Take out your calendars and planners for next year, or look at next year’s digital calendar. Buy a new calendar now, if you don’t have one yet. Go through the first months of the year, or the remainder of the school year, and add important dates such as school holidays, vacations, early release days, upcoming birthdays, etc. Filling in your calendar now will help you to quickly get back on track.
Meal Plan & Shop
After lots of holiday eating, it can be challenging to get back to regular meals. Schedule some time to meal plan and to go grocery shopping so that regular meals during the first weeks back to school and work will be easier.
Adjust Sleeping Schedules
If your family has been on vacation for a week or two, adjust your alarm clocks to slowly move back to getting up earlier each day, so that it is not a shock to the system when your family goes back to work and school.
